Spiritual Direction & Pastoral Care
Soul Care Sessions
In-person or on Zoom
Sometimes we need a soul friend to bear witness to our inner longings and encourage us to see where the holy may be whispering to us. Scripture says that wherever two or three are gathered, God is in the midst. I believe that each of us has access to the flow of Divine Love. Just as a stream can get clogged with debris, we might find obstacles that are impeding the current in us. These may be external circumstances, such as illness or loss, or internal fears and anxieties. The stuck places may be the residue of trauma or the stubbornness of our ego. My work with you is to help you become aware of the blocks to the movement of grace within you and out through you into the world.
In addition to my 30 years as a minister and chaplain, I draw on the Spiritual Direction tradition and on my training in Gestalt Pastoral Care as I sit with you to discern where God (your higher power/deeper wisdom/True Self) is speaking. Liz Budd Ellman of Spiritual Directors International says, “Simply put, spiritual direction is helping people tell their sacred stories everyday. … Spiritual direction helps us learn how to live in peace, with compassion, promoting justice, as humble servants of that which lies beyond all names.” Tilda Norberg, founder of Gestalt Pastoral Care and my teacher, describes the work as, “attentive to the beautiful intricate dance between body, mind, emotions, spirit and social context … it invites attention to the rich liveliness of each present moment, for it is there that personal discoveries are made, and God is revealed.”
What You Can Expect During a Session
Each 45-minute session will begin with a time of centering and grounding, followed by 25 – 30 minutes of Laura listening as you express where you are, asking questions for clarity, and attending to the places where your energy changes. During the last 10-15 minutes Laura leads a focused time of prayer which may include periods of silence, guided imagery, or brief, simple rituals. If the sessions are in-person, with your consent, they may include anointing and the laying on of hands (an ancient form of healing touch). If you can’t find a time that works for you using the book now button, please contact me through the contact page of this website.
Laura has practiced and studied prayer for more than 4 decades. In addition to her Master of Divinity, she completed programs in healing prayer (Gestalt Pastoral Care and Light and Love Ministries), Contemplative Spirituality at the Shalem Institute, Positive Psychology, Social Justice Chaplaincy, Hospice Chaplaincy, and Reiki (level one). Additionally, she is well-versed in the Enneagram, Sufi poetry, the 12 steps, and the perennial wisdom and mystical traditions. Guiding groups and individuals into profound, transformative prayer is her passion and great joy.
