I recently downloaded Merlin – the bird identification app from Cornell University. Sitting on my deck with the sound identification turned on, I love hearing the morning chorus with new ears – more attuned to the individual players in the symphony. One performer that is almost always present is a little bird whose song brought joy to me in the early days of the pandemic. A tiny Carolina wren would come to my deck each morning to sing; I began to hear her tune throughout the day as I walked around my yard.
About 5 inches in length and less than an ounce in weight, these little wrens nonetheless have one of the loudest songs in the neighborhood. Even amidst the clattering of crows, their sweet song rises through the trees, above the cacophony. I take great comfort in this imagery – the small body with the big voice; the bright song from a little brown bird.
We don’t have to be the biggest or the brightest or the most recognizable. Our own beautiful, authentic voice can rise in joy each morning to bless the world. What does your heart want to express today? Sing out!
